Dave Chappelle – Netflix Responds To Employees Who Boycotted His Comedy Special Over Trans Jokes: If It’s Hard To Support Our Content, Netflix May Not Be The Place For You

Netflix is showing full support for their “controversial” content creators, including Dave Chappelle.

The streaming service recently issued a “culture memo” to employees, stating that they have no plans to limit controversial content, despite employees efforts. The memo comes after hundreds of workers went on strike following the release of Dave Chappelle‘s comedy special The Closer.

Criticizers of the Netflix special accuse the comedian of being transphobic and homophobic. Dave joked that trans people and allies have “thin skin” and made comments such as ‘gender is a fact’. Netflix’s CEO Ted Sarandos immediately rallied to support the special, and aired the project despite employee concerns with the film.

Addressing the distribution of “controversial content,” Netflix wrote:

“To help members make informed choices about what to watch, we offer ratings, content warnings and easy to use parental controls.

Not everyone will like — or agree with — everything on our service.

While every title is different, we approach them based on the same set of principles: we support the artistic expression of the creators we choose to work with; we program for a diversity of audiences and tastes; and we let viewers decide what’s appropriate for them, versus having Netflix censor specific artists or voices…..”

It continues:

“As employees we support the principle that Netflix offers a diversity of stories, even if we find some titles counter to our own personal values.

Depending on your role, you may need to work on titles you perceive to be harmful. If you’d find it hard to support our content breadth, Netflix may not be the best place for you.”

Reportedly, the new memo titled “Netflix Culture – Seeking Excellence”, is the first adjustment the entertainment company’s made to culture standards in five years.
