Travis Scott Performs First Televised Appearance Since Astroworld Tragedy, Amidst Morgan Wallen’s Return Post N-Word Controversy

Is it time for cancel culture to forgive Travis Scott and Morgan Wallen for their controversial mishaps?

Yesterday (May 15) the Billboard Music Awards took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. During the musical event rapper Travis Scott, 31, and country singer Morgan Wallen, 29, performed their first major televised appearance since their respective controversies that took place last year. Travis Scott Performed “Mafia” and Morgan Wallen sang “Don’t Think Jesus” and “Wasted on You.”

As previously reported, Travis Scott found himself in the hot seat after his three-day Astroworld Festival took a turn for the worse on day one. On November 5, 2021, a crowd crush, unfortunately, took the lives of 10 people, aged 9 to 27, and left multiple others hospitalized. Critics blame Scott for not stopping the concert to check on his injured fans. However, he has since claimed he wasn’t aware of what was taking place on the festival grounds during his performance. Following the tragic situation, the “SICKO MODE” rapper was hit with close to 300 civil wrongful death, personal injury, and premises liability lawsuits.

Morgan Wallen’s actions from last year caused a few problems in his own career as well. In a video previously leaked online, the country star can be heard using the N-word with his white counterparts outside of his Nashville home. Wallen did issue an apology, however, the damage was seemingly already done.

In addition to multiple radio stations removing his music from their playlist, his contract with Big Loud Records was suspended “indefinitely” and he was banned from consideration of winning any awards at the 2021 Academy of Country Music Awards.

Diddy, the 2022 Billboard Music Awards host, spoke on Wallen and Scott’s controversies and said,

“We’re un-canceling the canceled. [Brother] Love does not rock like that. I looked at Morgan’s situation. I looked at Travis’ situation and I said, ‘Man, I got some power to do something about that because we can’t start that in the music industry or even in life period, so I’m here to forgive, to unify, to celebrate, and to have everybody be free.

He added,

“That’s my job.”

Social media also weighed in on the two stars performing live on a large stage again.
